Public Notice – Prohibition On The Use Of Foreign Currency For Local Transaction Within The Republic United Of Tanzania
The Government of Tanzania has issued Regulations to the use of Foreign Currency act, 2025. The regulations were published in the Government Gazette No.198, dated 28th March, 2025. Under these Regulations, pricing and payment for all goods and services within the country must be in Tanzanian Shillings.
Please note that this will most likely impact transactions done locally by tourists on-ground. It would be important to inform clients that for any cash transactions, they will need to convert their currency to Tanzanian Shillings alternatively they can make payments via credit cards.
There are exceptions for foreign organizations and we are consulting our Financial experts and the Tanzania Government through our Umbrella body, the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (TATO), to advocate for the exemptions to cover our sectors such as tourism, aviation, and travel. As we get this clarified, we will still quote in Foreign Currency and receive payment from you in foreign currency as has been the norm for now.
We will share any updates as they become available. However, please be advised that the regulation is effective from date of the Gazette Notice, dated 28th March, 2025. Please find the official communication from the document attached in the link below.
