When planning a safari to Botswana, most would start by asking just what the best time of year to visit would be. It’s often suggested that the drier season between May and September would be ideal due to moderate temperatures, sparse landscapes and the abundance of water in the Okavango Delta. However, experiencing Botswana in the green season, from about mid-November to March, has its own incredibly unique advantages. Aside from the huge draw of better rates, this time is characterized by lush landscapes, young animals, vibrant birdlife, zebra migrations and arguably the best light for photography.

Green season typically coincides with Botswana’s rains, however these aren’t the typical day-after-day torrential rain that some think of; they instead tend to be short and sporadic thunderstorms often providing relief from the summer heat. The rains enrich the soil filling previously bone-dry waterholes and floodplains, and give new life to both flora and fauna. As wildlife tends to give birth during this time, animal-viewing can be incredibly rewarding; not only because of increased chances of seeing cute youngsters, but also, more ominously, because of the predator presence that naturally follows.

Understanding the migrations during this time will also allow one to make the most out of a safari. One of the largest zebra migrations worldwide takes place during this time with 20,000+ leaving Chobe & the northern Makgadikgadi in pursuit of water in the now waterlogged Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Nxai Pan National Park and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve also become heavily populated with plains game, thus bringing with them charismatic cats & other predators on the hunt.

Vibrant colours due to the lush landscapes, great light and clear air also allow excellent photographic opportunities. Dramatic clouds make for epic sunset shots and the long summer days mean cameras can be out for extended periods of time. Birdwatchers are also in for a treat. Throughout this time, Botswana plays gracious host to such vibrant birdlife. Attracting more than 600 species, with many migrating great distances, even non-birders will find themselves reaching for their binoculars.
