Tanzania Grants Grace Period For New Tourism Fee Implementation
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in Tanzania has announced a 10-month grace period for implementing new Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority tourism fees. The grace period, effective from February 15 to December 31, addresses stakeholder concerns about the Wildlife Conservation (Non-Consumptive Wildlife Utilization) Regulations published in October 2024, which introduced new fees for various activities and services in conservation areas across the country.
Tanzania – Amended Regulations on The Wildlife Conservation (Non-Consumptive Wildlife Utilization) 2024 and The Antiquities (User Fees) Rules 2024
Please be informed that the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) has made amendments to the fees for various Park Entries and Accommodation. Attached, you will find the official document detailing these changes along with the public notice. The revised fees have already been implemented and are now applicable to the visitors. We are currently analyzing the new rates, which include both gate entry and bednight/accommodation charges, and will share the updated totals with you as soon as possible.
One of the parks affected include Lake Natron home of the deadly Red Lake – so named because of its magnificent crimson-red looks, which definitely looks off and eerie. The shade is due to a high concentration of minerals, mostly sodium carbonate, which seep into the lake from surrounding volcanic soils.
Rwanda To Introduce Tourism Levy
Rwanda’s government has announced that it will introduce a tourism levy to support development of the industry.
The Levy has been approved by Rwanda’s Cabinet as one of several tax policy reforms on February 10, the levy will be payable by tourists and fixed at 3% of the overall hotel room rate for the duration of stay. The Cabinet’s statement on the changes did not include an implementation date but stressed that the reforms would be adopted before the end of Rwanda’s 2024/25 financial year (June 30).
The levy is expected to contribute to the goal of generating US$1.1 billion in tourism revenue by 2029 as outlined in government’s 2nd National Strategy for Transformation (NST2). Under NST2, innovative tourism and conservation financing initiatives, such as green bonds, investments in conservation, public-private partnerships, and product diversification, are expected to elevate Rwanda into a high-end tourism market. New and existing tourism destinations will be developed nationwide to diversify tourist attractions, with a strong focus on promoting nature-based tourism.
