Tanzania Update: Foreign Currency Exemption for Tour Operators

Following a recent review, the Bank of Tanzania has confirmed that resident tour operators, acting on behalf of non-resident tourists, may now directly pay for goods and services using foreign currencies. This is a key development, simplifying transactions for all international clientele. Tour operators are also permitted to use foreign currencies to acquire specialized motor vehicles designed exclusively for tourism from domestic suppliers. This clarification, stems from the Foreign Currency Usage Regulations, 2025. While international transactions are now clear, it remains mandatory for all on-the-ground expenses within Tanzania – such as local accommodation, park fees, and retail purchases – to be quoted and settled in Tanzanian Shillings (TZS).

Tanzania: Manyara Region Experiences Shallow Earthquake with Limited Impact

A shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred in Tanzania’s Manyara region on July 10, 2025. The epicenter was located approximately 13.8 kilometers from the Manyara regional center, indicating that the seismic activity originated relatively close to the Earth’s surface. While shallow earthquakes can sometimes lead to more pronounced shaking and potential damage due to their proximity to populated areas, initial assessments suggest a minimal impact in Manyara. Reports indicate that residents in nearby areas experienced weak to light shaking, but fortunately, no significant damage to structures or infrastructure has been reported thus far. Furthermore, consistent with the moderate magnitude of the event, no aftershocks have been recorded.
The Manyara region is situated within the East African Rift System, a geologically active zone where such seismic events are a natural occurrence. The absence of widespread damage and aftershocks in this instance provides reassurance to the local populace. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, but the immediate assessment points to a limited overall impact from this morning’s earthquake.
