East Africa: Raising Awareness Among Tourists/Visitors On The Consequences Of Illegal Possession Of Government Trophies

The Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) is seeking cooperation from the tourism sector to help combat the illegal trafficking of wildlife products. TAWA, which is responsible for protecting wildlife and promoting sustainable tourism, has noticed a rise in incidents where tourists are found in possession of unauthorized trophies at key entry and exit points like Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) and various border crossings. Many of these cases involve travelers unknowingly purchasing or collecting items made from protected wildlife parts, such as horns, ivory, bones, and feathers. Possession of these items without a valid permit can lead to serious legal consequences and inconvenience at airports and border posts.
