East Africa Tourism Surges Post – Pandemic
East Africa’s tourism sector is making a strong post-pandemic comeback with Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia all reporting solid growth in visitor spend, job creation and GDP contribution. According to the latest World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Economic Impact Research, in partnership with Oxford Economics, Kenya’s travel and tourism sector is projected to contribute KSh1.2 trillion (€8.1 billion) to the economy in 2025, up 24% from 2019, accounting for 7.2% of the country’s GDP. The sector supports 1.7 million jobs and generates US$2.2 billion (€1.9 billion) in visitor spend – up from US$2.1 billion (€1.8 billion) the previous year.
Flightlink Launches New Kenya – Tanzania Routes
Tanzanian regional carrier Flightlink has announced the introduction of two routes connecting Kenya and Tanzania. The airline will operate flights from Wilson Airport, Nairobi, to Arusha Airport and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar.
Rwanda: Hemingway’s Collection Official Debut!
Hemingways Hospitality has announced its expansion into Rwanda with the acquisition of Heaven Holdings in Kigali. This strategic move includes the acquisition of The Retreat Hotel, Fusion Restaurant, Heaven Restaurant, Heaven Boutique Hotel, and Heaven Experiences, an established tour operating arm. This marks a significant milestone for Hemingways Collection, as it introduces a fifth property and, for the first time, extends the brand’s footprint beyond Kenya into another thriving luxury tourism destination.
Kenya Performs Endangered Species Translocation
The Kenya Wildlife Service recently moved eight endangered Rothschild’s giraffes from Soysambu Conservancy to Solai Sanctuary in Nakuru County as part of a giraffe translocation exercise aiming to provide a suitable new habitat for the giraffes.
